Six Ways to Unblock a Drain

Do you live in Adelaide and Suffer from a Blocked Drain?

Is your toilet, sink or bath draining slowly or not draining at all? Is water pooling outside of your property? It sounds like you have a blocked drain. Before you call Modern Era Plumbing and Gas Solutions try these 6 easy ways to unblock it

1. Check the U-Turn

First things first check that the blockage is not in the U-bend of the sink. Often food blockages have not got further than the drain directly beneath the sink. Make sure you place a bucket under the drain to catch any water or waste, before unscrewing the two connections. Remove any blockages and give it a quick clean.

2. The Old Fashion Way

You can’t beat the old fashion plunger to force the blockage through the plumbing pipe. It’s the force of the push that forces air through the pipe to clear the clog. Make sure you are running water in the sink, and that if you have a double sink that you cover the drain. Try this a few times before you give up and move on to the next tip.

3. Naturally and Environmentally Friendly Way

If the blockage is caused by soap or fat you could try unblocking it with boiling water, but be careful not to burn yourself or melt the sink seal. You could try putting 1/2 cup salt, 1/2 cup bi-carb, 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup hot water. This is a safe and environmentally friendly method that is harmless to you, however it will not help with severe blockages.

Some Health food stores stock the bacteria based enzyme cleaners, which can also be quite successful..

4. The Technical Way

You can hire a Drain Snake from most hire places, however, be aware that these require a bit of skill and can be quite dangerous to your pipes if not used correctly. These will unblock just about anything, including tree roots. Make sure you wear protective clothing and practice good hygiene after coming into contact with drain fluids.

5. The Toxic Way

Drain-O, Hydrochloric Acid or Caustic Soda are available at most hardware stores. You pour the substance down the affected drain, leave for 20-30 minutes (refer to instructions), and follow with cold water afterwards. NEVER hot water as it may spray back up in your face. Follow instructions carefully, and always wear gloves and a breathing mask as the toxic smell can be hazardous to your health
